I'm a vegan and I have horses. I agree, horses should not be used for tourist carriage rides, especially on pavement, living in cities. That said, I do ride. Often bareback and bitless, sometimes even completely tackless. Genuinely curious about your thoughts on that. This is me on my horse.

Well, here's the thing. My horse loves to go on adventures. Like 10 kilometer rides in the wilderness. I do not have the physical ability to match his pace on the ground. The only way he will get to experience those things is if I am on his back. I can't very well turn him loose in the woods.

He also tends to be overweight. It is important to keep him fit and exercised. While he and his two equine friends are free to roam over the 5 acres or so of pasture I provide to them, it's not enough. He will stand in one spot and just eat all day. How do I exercise hi without riding?

But don't get me wrong. I ask myself those questions every day. I strive to do better every day. I spend a lot more time around him on the ground than on his back. But there are things we just cannot do if I don't ride him. He will not get to explore, he will be stuck inside a fence if I don't.
