Fortunately my folks don't do that. I remember my Mom cringing whenever my grandmother (whose favorite radio show growing up was Amos n' Andy) would call the area of town where the low-income African-American people lived "Black Bottom". (She wasn't racist, just racially insensitive)
Does she also refer to anyone who was adopted as “the adopted cousin/nephew/whatever”? Ma’am, that adoption was finalized 60 years ago. No need to keep talking about it!
Just to clarify, my parents do NOT do this, and we have several family members who were adopted. Having grown up with so many family members who were adopted is precisely the reason I'm annoyed whenever I hear this one.
My mom isn't always negative, either, but when she's positive it can be creepy. Not long ago she kept gushing to me about how "beautiful" the daughter of a couple my age is, like she used to ages ago about girls she wished I would date. It was really unsettling, because this kid could be my daughter
