We got it here in Edinburgh and me and the wife went traipsing up a local hill in the pitch black in a desperate attempt to finally see the damn thing after years and years of false alarms.

It wasn't as vibrant as you got it, but my god, it still took my breath away. Just amazing stuff!

Thank you! We were quite lucky that there's a decently high vantage point over the city not too far from us. I hadn't gotten back into "proper" photography again at that point, so I only had my phone camera, but it actually did surprisingly well, I have to say!

Yeah, it's kind of weird really. My phone tends to handle night time scenes so much better than my D750 or my M10mk2 - I guess it's down to all the random nonsense AI processing lunacy they stuff into it. Just once in a while that actually ends up being beneficial rather than an icky horror!

I like to know what's going on in the process too. Stuff hidden in a black box doesn't appeal even if it gives good results. I keep the Vivid profile on and that's what I see in my viewfinder but I always edit to my own taste from raw. It's close to what I like but only occasionally what I want.

I have seen them thousands of times, I lived in AK for 40 years

When the lights are best it's always bitter frickin cold

We used to sit in lawn chairs with a heavy blanket sipping hot coco with a shot of Malibu rum in it & smoking a nice joint watching them dance across the night sky
