I mean a big part of it is that a lot of prominent video essayists started on YouTube. Hammer, nail, etc

This predates YouTube, I think it's inherent to the format. The only reason to convey information via video rather than text is (1) to skip "reasoning" part of brain as much as possible, or (2) you have amazing never-before-seen nature footage from the most expensive cameras ever designed.

It's not just Internet videos, too! Documentaries are almost always manipulative.
