5 years in Toronto taught me I really, really, really missed hills. And the low afternoon light hitting the ridges and casting hard-cut shadows. Almost cried coming back to Welly and seeing exactly that in the Western hills.

Absolutely get that. I grew up in taumarunui surrounded by hills. I miss nature of all sorts. Rural comforts like the river, the quiet, the emptiness, the sound of bird diversity. I'll definitely have a few moments I'm sure. What kept you in Toronto so long?
don't get me wrong, I really like Toronto as a city; I felt and home there & did again when I was back for a couple of weeks last year. But it is Massive and Urban and Flat. It's the people and neighborhoods that make it cool. Not much to recommend about its physical form imo.
Yeah agree completely. I think as a newcomer who moved knowing nobody, I'm finding it a bit tougher to love without having that community established but I'm making progress. It's just so much effort constantly
Yes, my context was with a grad student cohort I made many friends in, and an online acquaintance who was generous in introducing me to his friend group (and cough hooking up for a while); my husband was in that broader group.
