Yes and no, I think. At least as far as the Internet, there were online forums, which were a sort of very disjointed mass of social media cells.

Which is probably why they didn't hit the news as fervently as Xwitter posts and such, come to think of it. Maybe consolidation wasn't such a bad idea.

Evangelical culture has been building towards this for a long time. There's been a movement that specifically used cult tactics to increase the separation between "in group" and every one else.
