I think we kind of have, already! Here's a "Business Resolution" we passed at this past year's General Assembly, which is about as strong and legally defensible statement as we can produce, given our commitment to non-creedalism. Whether we fit the OPs definition of "major recognized religion", idk.
To be clear, I do not fancy myself an arbiter of what is or is not a valid religion! I just meant a sufficiently well-established religion that interfering in its practices would give Republicans pause.
For sure — that’s what I figured you meant, and fully acknowledging that while we are a real religion making such a statement, Republicans are unlikely to be particularly persuaded.
I was thinking we need a religion to make gender-affirming health care, specifically, a tenet of the faith the way Christian Scientists have refusal of healthcare. Make it about faith-based parental choice, which the GOP traditionally supports.
I think part of the reasoning for passing this resolution in June was to pave the way for religious freedom claims by transgender members of the UU faith in case the worst happened in November... And it did.
