The tragedy of VG's is that you need your nose about 2 feet away to really appreciate them, but you can't get near them. A genius bit of hanging in The Belvedere in Vienna has Klimt's Kiss drawing the crowd from VG's The Plain of Auvers to its right so you can sneak your nose into the brushwork.
I used to turn up to Tate Modern at opening time and leg it straight to the Rothko room. Being alone in that room for five or ten minutes you could almost hear the paintings humming.
This the key to Museum heaven. I used to do the same at the Prado with Las Meninas or the Black paintings. Just me and the genius of Velazquez and Goya, sometimes for 10 or 15 minutes.
Oh wow! The fam & I are going in a few weeks, one of the very few times I have actually managed to pre-book something and not just find out about it long after the last ticket has gone 😁
