Look, don't take this the wrong way, but I don't understand how "Everything I Do (I Do It For You)" by Bryan Adams was a massive hit on the charts.
It's a good song! It makes sense that it charted, but seven weeks at #1 in 1991?
I don't get it, y'all. I don't. It is beyond my understanding.

RIP to the monoculture.
So the boys, in protest, would always pick the one song that had the word fart in it. Chaos ensued.
Christian Slater ffs. Lol

I blame Kevin Costner.
SIXTEEN CONSECUTIVE WEEKS at number one.
SIXTEEN.

The film was GIGANTIC and so it was played and pushed everywhere.
Kids bought it, adults bought it, your mum bought it.

Untouchables was good at the time. I tried it again recently. More like Unwatchables.
But I know a lot of people liked Kostner. Agree to disagree.
91: Everything I Do/Robin Hood
90: Vogue/Dick Tracy
89: Batdance/Batman
88: Kokomo/Cocktail
87: Shakedown/Beverly Hills Cop II
86: Take My Breath Away/Top Gun
85: The Power of Love/Back to the Future
84: Ghostbusters/Ghostbusters
Why did they hold out for so long?
In the United Kingdom, "(Everything I Do) I Do It for You" had the longest unbroken run at number one, spending sixteen consecutive weeks at the top of the UK Singles Chart from July 7, 1991, to October 27 when it dropped to number four,[8]
Also keep in mind that the 90's were an era of women begging their spouses to help around the house. And then here comes 🎶 "I would die for youuuu ..." 🎶
It was 15 or 16 weeks at least (in the UK)
Awful dirge.
'Losing My Religion' by R.E.M. only ranked 33rd that year.
WTF?
Happy holidays 😊
Not this movie, but close.
Also I like it, but it’s not a track that does well on endless repeat
It managed to appeal to lots of people who didn’t usually buy (or even show interest in) music but could eventually be persuaded for all sorts of reasons, ranging to poignant to banal.
I do not understand these people, but I hope they’re happy with themselves.
I actually recall clearly that while I could hum it (and did, much to my annoyance), I NEVER knew the words. That bugged me then & still does.
Patient, I meant "patient!"
Also we were all kicked in the head by horses in the summer of '91, so we were a little groggy.
Sorry I love it
and the video was very well done and had scenes from that film. It was the second highest-grossing film that year, made about 390 million. Think that probably boosted the song a great deal; that's my best theory as a Film Maniac.

For reference, what were the alternatives in 1991?
But there were others, right? I mean ... surely there were?

We built this city. We built this city on rock and roll. Built this city. We built this city on rock and roll. Say you don't know me or recognize my face. Say you don't care who goes to that kind of place. Knee deep in the hoopla sinking in your fight. Too many runaways eating up the night
We built this city, we built this city on rock and roll. We built this city, we built this city on rock and roll. Built this city, we built this city on rock and roll.
