...that's also why he doesn't question it when it suddenly appears in his bedroom. If he had thought the Lone Gunmen were behind it, he would have just asked them (and maybe he did and they negated all involvement). He cannot ask Scully though, because they both dread a post-FTF conversation.

i don’t think he considered that anyone actually gave it to him, i always interpreted “it was a gift” as him having no clue where it came from and just having nothing else to say 😆

I never thought that and I’m not buying it. I think his hesitation was just him trying to figure out what to say or where it came from. It would be so shockingly out of character for Scully that I doubt he would think that.

But he doesn’t start with „Did I ever tell you I got a waterbed?“. The implication is he thinks she knows he has one and he stumbles over the information that she does not.
I completely agree with you it would be OOC for her! But we know he thinks it was a gift. Who else would he think it was?

He’s just being mulder. It’s funny that he tells her with no context. That’s as far as it goes. There’s no implication.
