It seems like they are one of the first birds to migrate through here (central BC) in the spring, and one of the last to leave! Maybe they are just the loudest: they love hammering on chimney caps.

They seem to stay around here in Massachusetts all year, but we never see them as much as the other woodpeckers, even the pileateds :)
