My grandfather was an “illegal immigrant” like lots of Italians. He was turned back due to racist quotas before he came in through Canada. After living in the US for over 20 years illegally, all he had to do for citizenship was go to Canada for a day. Funny, how Italians think they did it legally.

And yet, our history of excluding those we deem as "others" runs deep. The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 comes to mind — excluding people based on country of origin.

💯 And for many years - when many of these folks' ancestors came over - there were virtually no rules for anyone who wanted in. So, "doing it the right way" wouldn't be relevant. Sadly & frustratingly, when you bring stuff like this to their attention it usually just bounces off harmlessly.

Mine didn't do it the right way, in more ways than can be counted. Some walked off the Mayflower, others were stowaways on hellacious journeys, and some just bought a ticket on a boat.
