I'm also baffled as to how 'ECO' takes about 7 years

And doesn’t spin properly. I guess that’s eco- friendly if you can just peg washing on a line for a day or so, but that’s hardly a global option

Mine does full spin on the eco options. It's usually reduced water and heating and longer soaking.

Well, that’s good. The eco cycle on mine spins at a rate that leaves laundry feeling like it hasn’t been spun at all.

The night mode on mine has to be adjusted upwards from some soggy nonsense setting (I think because they didn't want to wake people up with noisier spinning)

Night mode? I think your washing machine is just way fancier than mine

That's coz it's spreading the cost across a year, rather than doing the job you expected it to do.

It's because heating water uses more energy than sloshing around colder water for ages.

By analogy, it takes less petrol to drive at 30mph than it does to drive at 60mph. A journey that takes longer is "eco".
Washing machine gets the dirt out with longer soaks in smaller amounts of cooler water.
