I think some people operate like the Icelandic government; there's a set list of Proper Names, and the person they're talking to must be trying to say one of them. But for some reason it's coming out of their mouth wrong, so just keep guessing.

My daughter (9) is called Amelie as well and trying to get my father to pronounce it properly was impossible. In the end we just stopped correcting him a let him call her whatever.
