Also, Susan Collins: I have spoken with Assad, and he assured me that he has learned his lesson and will henceforth be a forthright empathetic gentleman.
Biden’s support of Ukraine was the beginning of the end for Assad. As discussed, it was a great move in international politics; the war weakened Russia, forcing it to abandon Syria. Putin was defeated without US forces having to engage in war against Russia.
Is it also true (I"m not up on all of this) that Israel's actions in the past year plus, especially the attacks on Hezbollah weakened support for Assad by redirecting that support to Lebanon? Totally an ignorant American on much of this and admitting it.
I do hope the ultimate outcome is great for Syria. I was encouraged by the photo that included women, sans headscarves and covering clothing, riding in a car with men and rejoicing. May that continue to be the country the leaders now continue to create and support.
Syria is going to be a mess for a while, and likely become heavily fundamentalist, and no less brutal. I wouldn't want to be a woman there right now. It's rare that countries can transition from despotic rule to self rule without dedicated reconstruction, which is not going to happen.
Since when is exchanging cruel despots in the Middle East ever something good for people- especially women? And the US holds the record for being the historically poorest chooser of who to back.
I think we (the u.s.) backs everyone at one time or another depending on the "needs of the day". Gives our military complex (money makers) stuff to sell and people to sell it to doesn't it? Not "right" but real. We (our Government) does what is expedient for "us" in their opinion.
Wow. I looked into the situation in Syria a few years ago. I could not make heads or tails of who was worse. I do not share your optimism, but I sure hope you are right. Unfortunately, history teaches me that such messes are NEVER followed by a club of swell guys who spread joy and rainbows.
I agree. Maybe someone could offer up an occasion in Middle East history where interference from the West has resulted in anything other than murderous and destructive anarchy across the region.
Though for now it actually looks hopeful; the first statement by the leader of HTS has been stressing peaceful transition, has been reassuring opponents that there won't be a religious war. Nobody has looted government ministries. The Jordanian Border is open again, with Syrians returning home.
HTS split from, and has been at odds with AQ for 7 years. They've been less repressive and moralizing in governing Idlib province. Their leader is making "peaceful, no revenge" noises, his followers seem to be behaving themselves so far. But yeah, they're still Islamists; I am suspicious of that.
Maybe someone could offer up an occasion in Middle East history where interference from the West has resulted in anything other than murderous and destructive anarchy across the region.
let THE PEOPLE & THEIR CULTURE determine the future 🇸🇾
I sure as hell know that Putin doesn’t deserve to have ANY INFLUENCE outside his own borders
and I sure as hell know OUR U.S. GOV’T motives are also more questionable — being as WE ARE NO LONGER ANY “perfect” EXAMPLE 1/2 👇🏾
Slow the roll bro. The people that replace Assad may be worse we are talking about Islamic terrorists isis things like that. I'd like to see Syria become a real democracy. I don't know man.
In the Quran it says that you will see Jesus in the yellow robes walking through the streets of Damascus
@wajali.bsky.social do you want to take this one boss or I. No there is a reference in the Quran about jesus's return. It says in the fact that he will be king for I think a hundred years and then he will be buried in the tomb next to Muhammad to. The belief in Islam was Jesus ascended into heavens
I will totally admit that I am no Quran scholar. But I did read the Mueller report and most of Project 2025, among other things. And my ancestors believed man came from the bamboo and woman from the orchids. Bonus points for anyone who knows without using Google on that.
You know the book that I ordered I didn't read because it was written by Alan dershowitz on that subject and I think he's ridiculous. I do need to read that. I am going to have project 2025 read also this year
They've been fighting ISIS 🤷
Freed people from ISIS prisons
I mean, being an islamist or let's say a real muslim, means fighting fake scum imposters like ISIS that have been exclusively targeting and killing muslims under a false flag.
No, being an Islamist is being a radical Muslim like Isis and the Taliban. They may be freeing ISIS prisoners right now but let’s see what type of government rises from the ashes before we start celebrating.
That's not actually the definition of an islamist.
Being a islamist means following and obeying the Islamic laws and teachings. So basically being an islamist means being a Muslim and shouldn't be associated with Terrorism
The entire GOP are losers. Not only at home but on the world stage and why the fook did Macron even think of inviting that Orange paesant to the Notre Dame de Paris.
It’s certainly a good day whenever a ruthless dictator and a brutal regime fall. However, the jury is out on what Syria’s future will look like with the rebels in control. The lesson from Iraq is that a power vacuum will usher in violence and suffering for Syrians in the aftermath. 🙏🤞☮️
And don’t you find it funny that the same people pushing that Ukraine not fall to a dictator are upset that Syrians freed themselves from one?
Gee, I wonder why…
They will soon especially after what just happened in Syria. I promise! And once Putin collapses in Russia. Surely, many of Putin's allies around the world will face collapse from power across many continents and 90-100% countries will elect Centre to Left-Wing Progressive/Pro-Democracy Governments
There is a restaurant/bar on Cape Cod that has what amount to 'gender neutral' restrooms, but there are no signs that say that. The men's room has only stalls. 'Nuff said.
This is really really one of the least important things considering the horrors of war, but I hope this is a step toward restoring the Syrian spice trade and authentic Aleppo pepper
Ask the women and girls of Afghanistan how they feel about that. Oh wait, you can’t. Their voices aren’t allowed to be heard out loud anymore on punishment of death.
I guess the way I see it: autocracy is brutal and terrible but survivable. Because they’re just greedy and power-hungry; what they want is unfair, but at least it makes sense. Theocracy, on the other hand is not survivable, because what they want doesn’t even make sense. It’s just evil.
Why would you ask them what it’s like to live under Taliban rule? Because you seem to know fuck all about it, whereas they have years of experience.
Also: don’t spread your doom and gloom - fuckin brilliant foreign policy. Stick with that.
We have no idea if it is a great day yet. Depends on who replaces Assad and what opportunist will take over from within or from a hostile neighbor or foreign power. Suffering under someone else is still suffering, like in Animal Farm.
So many educated people there, so hopefully they have all the means to rebuild to a decent society for all. I’m wary of outside powers though, as well as internal ones. 🤞
Are you sure this is a great thing for the Syrians. Are you sure these people are eventually give freedom and equality to the Syrian people. I just don't trust religious people with hardcore religious ideology to be able to operate in a democratic fashion. I pray for them and all the best for them.
And a bad day for Putin’s apologists too. Trump will soon be alone trying to build a dictatorship in the US with no foreign dictators assistance. He will fail bigly
It’s not a done deal that HTS will be in charge. Revolutions are so hectic and these coalitions were only held together by mutual interest. It’s at least hope
A slightly comforting part of everything currently going on in the US is that there ARE other countries looking at it as a lesson and doing their part, to varying degrees of success, to prevent it being replicated here

Is it?
But, Russia, now has the mole it helped get elected again. So it should turn for them!!!
Weird but 100% true.

Didn't mean to be asinine with that comment

It only took Sinwar killing 40,000 Palestinians to free Syria from a War that killed 500,000 with deaths mounting daily.
Trolley train made the right turn.
Trump n'est entouré que de traitres
Ah well, he's moved on to (owning) bigger fish.
Does anyone really believe these rebels aren't just a new kind of murderous, awful, imprisoning assholes?
Pro tip: There are NO good days in Syria
Or most of the Middle East for that matter
This is what fanatical religiosity does
Christian Nationalism, come on down
Gee, I wonder why…
Why don’t you see what happens before spewing your doom and gloom?
Also: don’t spread your doom and gloom - fuckin brilliant foreign policy. Stick with that.
He might be hiding there.
…is a good day.
I very much doubt it.
We're quite fucked actually
PUTIN loses Syria in 2024, & picks up America in 2025, once PSYCHOPATHS Musk/Trump/Vance & #PutinsGOP take power.
We must save the world from us.
From one ethnic faction to another?
What will happen to women and girls?
Will regional oligarchs, dictators or strongmen flood the zone?
