Now if NBC REALLY wanted to go old-school, they'd air the original broadcast VERSIONS of those specials (i.e. no Island of Misfit Toys epilogue, June Foray as Karen, etc.) ...but I rather doubt that's gonna happen. Heck, I wonder if that'd even be POSSIBLE at this point.

It is rather striking to see that all of the big guns that used to be on CBS in the past are no longer there. A Charlie Brown Christmas is permanently on a streaming channel that very few people watch, The Grinch is mostly on NBC. And the post-Frosty Rankin-Bass stuff is largely on cable outlets.

In recent years, they've been scattered across AMC and Freeform. Some years, they were mostly on AMC. Other times, they split the difference.

Oh, and CBS used to air the Bugs Bunny Christmas specials. They've been on MeTV for quite a while now, and they'll also be on MeTV Toons during the holiday season.

CBS used to show Mickey's Christmas Carol too, but as with all Disney things, you're not seeing that over-the-air for free. anywhere.

I hated it when Apple got the rights to the Peanuts specials when the streaming wars were getting started, and only allowing a few more years of broadcasts on PBS before going to Apple TV exclusively. I have them on DVD and home-recorded VHS, but watching it live on antenna TV just hits different.

I wonder if CBS will still air "Frosty Returns"? It has a very divisive reputation from what I can gather, and CBS paired it with the '69 Frosty. Frosty's official DVD releases also have the CBS sequel on it as an extra feature. Does CBS still own the special, or is it split between DWC and CBS?

I think Classic Media and CBS share the special, and DWC owns distribution rights considering this version of Frosty is owned outright by them.

That said, I doubt NBC's going to air Frosty Returns, and I don't think CBS will either. What's the point?

Indeed. It's more of a curiosity nowadays, and the actual sequel, Frosty's Winter Wonderland, is much better IMO. I enjoy Frosty Returns as a guilty pleasure since it looks like a Peanuts special in parts and John Goodman does give a good performance as the famous snowman. 🙂
