I've been communicating with a friend entirely by writing on post-it notes for a month and want to do better, but i feel like just trying to mimic things online for me is about as effective as really learning pronunciation from DuoLingo

Look for adult ed, community colleges, something like that. I took an ASL class at Boston Center for Adult Ed when I lived near Boston and it was life-changing. Something in-person is definitely the way to do it.
Looking for a tutor from Gallaudet seems like a good idea. I endorse that suggestion. The Boston Center class was taught entirely by one deaf guy, so it was sink or swim. I think he had a whiteboard, but he didn't use it much. But find a way. Definitely worth it.
and i guess just to be a little more clear, I'm in the DC area. I know the types of places to check and can get to the same things on Google you can, but if anyone has specific places or people to talk to would really appreciate it.
