My sense is that the current authoritarianism problem started with Roe. Republicans knew most people agreed with Roe so they focused on the Supreme Court to force their anti-abortion agenda on the American public. Now the floodgates are open to all aspects of our lives.

Agree to some degree and maybe we are kind of saying the same thing. But I agree Roe was a trigger for different reasons. They needed another reason to drive Republicans to the polls, so they decided that making public health optional would be a good plank. Aka the “health freedom” movement.
