A game dev secret: People start getting excited about your game at the exact moment you're most sick of it. The community is what gives you your second wind. (It's also why CMs deserve both respect and homemade cookies.)

As an Indie (and not so Indie some-times) dev, I can relate to this. My 'favorite' phrase is:
"Hey! Get your S"·$· together! You owe it to the community!"
And good CMs can both build excitement and manage expectations in the player base (to some extent) to keep the fires burning during development and release. (See Coffee Stain Studios and Satisfactory for a good example.)
