I love most of Harris’s stuff, but this one I found a bit over the top, like he’d stuck every papal scandal for the past 900 years into one plot.

I’m currently re-reading - a third re-read - trying to tease out how Harris makes apparently ordinary material so compelling. The same here as with the immaculate ‘Cicero’ trilogy. I can but wish, and strive.
