Even in 2003, even while discussing copyright and new intelligent music software in the same piece, there's no anticipation of the current AI copyright crisis. Perhaps in other readings? Not a diss. I don't think many people saw it. I didn't.

It's definitely interesting... I started grad school in 2004, so feels around when my AI zeitgeist was calibrated. ML was clearly important even then, but I don't think many people then were all-in on purely low-level (raw pixels/audio/etc.) data-driven ML.

I do think some ppl thought AI music would be "solved" soon, but a common assumption was that it'd be solved one step up the abstraction layer. Something like: an AI songwriter model learns a key/melody/etc. model to write infinite hit singles, which are fed to AI performer models that realize them.
