people have had some success with putting the request into an image but even thats not perfect, and of course bot block lists help but i dunno how effective all of them are at this point.

Word of mouth, honestly. When I was initially trying to get my concept for my avatar rolling, it was a miserable experience "searching". I'd start by just asking anyone you know who they recommend or can personally say did a good job, and then maybe ask those people too if they aren't the one.

90% of the artists I know are furry artists(surprise). Finding an artist that hits the style I want is the main challenge since it isn't going to be "furry" at all.

Best way to check is go thru their profile and ask something that only a real artist can answer then you will know if they are real or not.

Highly recommend looking into VGen. A portfolio and commission platform made by humans, for humans. Everything is manually moderated and anyone who wants to post their art needs a code to do so, ensuring every user on the platform is genuine. But everyone is free to browse/request commissions

Looking for an artist is exciting! I've only found one way to avoid this: I don't announce that I'm seeking an artist; instead I search posts, forums, and art sites for the style I want, and "go to them". You make the first step and talk to someone real. I've had great luck going this route.

I have used Deviant Art plenty, and most artists will state right up front if they take commissions or not, which is a plus. There are plenty of real homes out there definitely hoping that you find them through the bots, so watch out for those extra fingers!

The ones that say "Oh man you summoned the b0ts" are typically running notifiers/bots explicitly for this. Sometimes an actual human is responding but it's uncommon. There are tools to automate this process.

Very true, thankfully I'm picky with the style I want so it weeds out 100% of the bot/scammer art. Issue is mostly trying to wade through all that just to find that one artist that as the style that speaks to me
