I love Wheeler! Although the biggest sub-range of the Rockies the Absaroka is oveshadowed by the nearby Wind Rivers and Tetons. Home to the remotest point in the 48 states this is my favorite region on earth. Here is a view of the two remotest peaks in the 48, Younts Peak and Thorofare Mountain.

Bridger Lake in the Teton Wilderness of the Bridger-Teton National Forest is the remotest point in the 48 states being further from a road("trailehad") than any other point in the the 48 states. Absaroka is the name for the Crow as a people and homeland. "Children of the great beaked bird."

Yes. Greater Yellowstone is the greatest mammalian habitat of the Northern Temperate Zone and is a quasi-intact ecosystem. It's the size of New Jersey, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont combined. I have bear psray holstered on my hip and an airhorn on my chest each and every hiking step.
