If your entire identity hinges on your hobby/fandom then you take any criticism of that group personally. Any criticism, no matter how nuanced is an attack on you personally. So the whole "YOU DONT MESS WITH GAMERS" is kind of cult-y, juvenile and dissuades independent thought.
