I think the question "How much does this app benefit people and who is disenfranchised by it" is one that could be asked more often -- older people and poor people are disenfranchised by that app, maybe it's great for people with mobility issues who don't have to get up to adjust the drapes...

I would say it's a trend that will make everyone, young and old, frustrated (compare the mental overhead of app vs manual knob) and force them to re-buy things that would otherwise still work #TheInternetOfThingsNobodyAskedFor

Agreed; removing a non-digital thing reduces the future-proofing and helps build in planned obsolescence. If you add the app and keep the physical mechanism, you get the best of both worlds except for the stockholders.

and the app will log you out when it updates with new ways to show you more ads. So when you go to do your dishes you have to go through the "forgot my password" process and see even more ads. Eventually the dishwasher will print ads on your dishes...and then run out of cyan ink and refuse to work.

For everyone replying with the child safety issue about chains, it would also be fine if there were a little remote on the table that I could pick up and point to a drape to make it move. The problem is needing an app. (As a consultant, I'm often in unfamiliar conference rooms.)

This is my employment sector. Integrated systems on one touch panel. Remotes always disappear. Wall switches are my preference.

nah. it's probably a marketing thing or maybe a smart buildings thing so they can track what happens in the room and when. can't track those little $2 chains that don't require developers or apps or web access or phones for the apps or electricity and special fittings. $$$$ (foolish humans)
