The ending paragraph of the article is disgusting. If I made a broad sweeping statement about a genre that was untrue because I was only aware of, like, three games in the genre, my editor would body slam me through a desk.

I said this in reply to the original post but I'll say it again: What irritates me about articles like this is that the author clearly didn't pay attention to the fact that the people at Sandfall clearly *adore* JRPGs and Expedition 33 is quite literally their love letter to the subgenre.

On that note, I'm starting to wonder if most CRPGs get these glowing reviews and uncritical praise purely because they aren't JRPGs.

Like, no joke, CRPGs are my favourite genre - but how is it that all JRPGs have "loud, obvious, unsubtle, unending narratives" and not... Mass Effect? Baldur's Gate?

Which is even funnier because Mass Effect is one of the reasons why a) RPGs fell out of popularity in western markets and b) everyone started being more vile towards JRPG devs. Which is crazy because Mass Effect is so far divorced from its RPG predecessors.

This obviously isn't helped by the fact that (ex) BioWare devs seem to think they have absolute authority on what an RPG is and should be and seem to pit all of that on player choice in story which is SO funny/ironics considering ME locks you as Shepard with minimal build variety lol.

Anyone who grew up during the G4 era of "games criticism" shouldn't be surprised that there's an undercurrent of racism that coated and still coats criticism of Japanese works.
