This is why throughout history once a superpower/hegemon cedes that position they very rarely get it back without a lot of time passing. And their domestic politics become fatally toxic while they try to get it back or maintain the fantasy that they didn’t lose it.

Here’s the problem: Even if we somehow get these fuckers out, how can we be assured that the same shit won’t happen again in 4 years? Are we supposed to rebuild institutions twice a decade? Will our former allies bother with us again knowing another asshole will be elected by the next Olympics?
