Adopted by the Wehrmacht on a limited basis form 1972 onwards, the STG-72 was seen mainly as an interim supplement to the standard issue 7.92x40mm STG-57 (also by Mauser) until Mauser's under-development 4.73x33mm caseless 'wundergewehr' was finally ready in 1991, entering service as the STG-91.
