This is a serious problem with governmental financial help and low priority, poor counties that are systematically underfunded or forgotten for what passes as "efficient allocation" of benefits ($$ mostly given to richer counties and cities).

National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) payouts (losses) from Hurricane Helene have reached $3B and growing. Florida accounts for $2.9B (!) of this total.

This data confirms that extremely low NFIP take-up rates in inland areas means the vast majority of residential flood losses were uninsured.
