I’d go so far as to say this is the most importantly development in poverty measurement in decades. Valuing in-kind benefits has long been the holy grail of poverty measurement. They basically solve this problem.

I’d also say they make one of the most important contributions in poverty research of at least the past half decade. By paving the way for poverty scholars to analyze the effects of Medicaid expansion & Obamacare, I don’t think their contribution can be overstated.

Moreover, health insurance & Medicaid are FAR MORE IMPORTANT than so many things being OVER-studied in the poverty literature like mass incarceration, $2/day poverty, and good god… evictions.

Of course, Remler, Korenman & Hyson aren’t the only ones on the case. Zewde, Wimer, Kaestner & others made key contributions too.

Bizarrely and unjustly, the pivotal 2017 Health Affairs article has only been cited 53 times (and I’m a good share of those).

Can’t explain why this paper hasn’t taken off. But want to do whatever I can to recommend it.
