Is this still scheduled? Last I read they’d set a £29k limit for this spring and the £38k move is unscheduled and therefore unlikely to happen this Parliament. And it’s not going to be something a Labour gov will do. However I’m possibly missing something.

Yes it is still scheduled, but in stages. First stage is to £29k in April, the stage 2 is to £35k probably Nov 24, and the final stage is to £38,700 in April 25.

The £29k may not sound quite as bad, as the original plan, but is still far too much for the majority of those affected.

I do, by the way, think the changes (and any requirement) are appalling. I just hadn’t seen the intention to schedule the staged increases set out yet.

I have made an assumption on the Nov date, simply because it is in line with the Nov budget.

However the two April dates have been published recently. They are also referenced in a letter I recieved from Tom Pursglove in relation to this change in policy.

So this policy change is a result of the gov. previous policy decisions and is a direct assault on its own citizens who just happen to fall on love with someone who is not a UK citizen.

NB that increase is a direct result of gov. policy to leave the EU, as now everyone coming to the UK need a visa. Whereas previously EU citizens did nor and were not counted in net migration figures.

This policy and its associated gov. claims are nothing less than political posturing aimed at demonising spousal immigrants, who currently only make up 10,000 of the 750,000 increase in net migration the gov. are claiming.

A significant percentage of those on spouse visas opt to work in the UK, so are like everyone else are paying tax and NI.

How any one can think of these people being ate the expense of the taxpayer is beyond me.

Then there is the IHS, NHS surcharge, which as of 6 afeb will be £1035 per year prorated for the length of the visa, so for a spouse visa is £2587.5, paid up front at the same time as the application fee.

This is on top of the visa fees, which are approx £1500 per application (every 2.5 years). The application cost the Home Office approx £400 to process. So every 2.5 years the HO makes approx £1100 profit per application.

The government claim that love should not be at the taxpayers expense. However, those on spouse visas have a clause in their visa which states "NO RECOURSE TO PUBLIC FUNDS". Meaning they are not allowed to claim ANY benefits at all, so it is not possible for their family to be a taxpayers expense.

Sorry to be cheeky, but please could you share this post. This unjust policy change effectively stops families from being together unless they are in the top 30% of UK earners.
