Although the Japanese characters used to spell the studio's name are ji-bu-ri, it comes from an Italian word which is pronounced with a hard G, which itself comes from an Arabic word also pronounced with a hard G. Miyazaki was likely just unaware of the pronunciation.

That's cool and I get it, it makes sense. However, as far as I'm concerned, the correct pronunciation of a name is how the owner of the name pronounces it. It does make me wonder how much personal pronunciation has evolved names over the years though. Language is weird!

I feel such a maxim still leaves room for Ghibli with a hard G. You yourself also do not call it Jiburi as Miyazaki et al. do. You say Jibli.

Miyazaki seems like a worldly man. I am sure he would be happy for it to be pronounced in the Italian or Libyan manner.

You can't really blame them considering "GH" in English is almost always pronounced as such, and the romanization of "ぎ" is "gi," which would lead many to assume they're attempting to evoke a hard g sound. By them I mean me, because I only found out I was wrong recently.
