Beautiful picture. Will probably go Supernova in the next 1,500 years (I read on Wikipedia, at least). Haven’t had to study stellar evolution for about 25 years so I’m a bit rusty!

That’s the most likely scenario yes! Or perhaps we should say it’s probably already gone supernova but we’re waiting to find out, since WR 102 is several thousand light years away. Somewhere out there an expanding shell of electromagnetic radiation is on its way.

Yes, named for 19th century Parisian astronomers Charles Wolf and Georges Rayet, who first described these stars.

It’s the same type of hot, mass-shedding star photographed by the Webb telescope that made the news earlier this year with its expanding dust rings (WR 140 in that case):
