Generally on the question of energy costs, I don't think that's been a focus of US AI companies up to this point, at least not in work that has been released. And why would they when they're raking in investment money hand over fist?

The energy efficiency claims are hard to substantiate, the original paper doesn't seem to say anything on the cost of queries. From the descriptions from secondhand sources it sounds reasonable but also like something that can be implemented into other LLMs with some elbow grease

Deepseek's ability is on par to slightly better than the other big boy LLMs (and tbh one should put decreasing stock in these benchmark values as they become targets for the models)--it isn't a GPT3-tier innovation (see table 4 on pg 13 https://arxiv.org/pdf/2501.12948)
