why is college so weirdly set up like a scam

i wouldn't go to olive garden and pay $10k to eat mcdonalds food, and also be told that if i don't get up and get the sauce myself i'll be removed from the premises with no refund. all just so i can get a piece of paper saying im worthy of wendy's food
