As another UK PM promises more police officers, they'll have some way to go to narrow this massive gap: England and Wales: 244 officers per 100,000 people; Scotland: 295 officers per 100,000 people :

Politicians were angry.
Internal costing and the MG reporting system have hamstrung the police & training to the point there are nearly as many costly support staff as officers.
All going to plan
2022 Figures, Eng plus Wales = 60,238,000
Divided by 100,000 = 602.38
So they will have to recruit 30,721 officers.
