I go through a similar process. After 4 or 5 nights of 4 or 5 hours of sleep, I'll finally collapse at 8 p.m. one night and get a good 7 hours of sleep, and then wake up really rested and ready to do something awesome at . . . 3 a.m. WTF? But I actually love that!
Staying up until 8:30 is a dream. I prefer dozing in my chair slumped over by 7 for maximum neck and back kinks. It's optimum for waking at 1 or 2 in pain.
