The Head Teacher in that story is wild for his comments. I fear it's asking too much for him to have ever reflected though.

The author STILL thinks about that encounter & the way it made him feel. That the HT was so casually able to do that makes me doubt his ability to reflect or even remember it at all. LGBT people carry strong memories of negative encounters that probably didn't even register for the offender(s).

Sadly, I think that is true for many child/teacher interactions in our schools. At 53, I still shiver at some of the offhand comments made to me by teachers (not for being gay, but for being, well, "different") that the teachers had probably forgotten the next day. 1/2

Teachers have a lot of power, and a longish career means 1000s of kids will have heard their hurtful but routine and (to the teacher) unremarkable comments. So much damage; so little reflection. 2/2

Mark, I hear you. I'm a teacher, as you know. And I was physically and mentally abused by teachers as a child for what I now know is ADHD. Thumped, slapped, hit with shoes, trainers, knuckles, kicked, slapped, and had my hair pulled REGULARLY by people who should not have been near children.

The physical abuse was the least of it. Their words have had very longlasting effects. I still live under their shadow.

As you know, I think that the institution is itself part of the problem. Schooling is a system of power. Good teachers are merely those who do the least damage to the kids.
