One small voice in defense. In the old days nobody knew what stories drove traffic. Gave space for more reasoned takes and long-term thinking.

Nowadays everyone is hugely aware of what gets clicks. Even if you want to be thoughtful. The incentives aren’t there. Not sure what the answer is.

I think the other part of this is a lot of political journalists are frustrated novelists who came of age when American literary culture was dying or dead, and they see Trump as this larger-than-life character like Huey Long instead of as a real villain who is killing real people and ruining lives
