I’d be curious if that pattern is elicited by the doomerism condition as well. If not, then I think you are tapping into something else.

The EFA was conducted on the emotional reactions to climate change after ppl read the Negative Emotion Induction text. Would you agree that that's the closest we can get to measuring the effect of the doomerism condition with the current dataset, or do you have something else in mind?

I'd then want to compare it to the control condition to see if it is mediating the effects on behavior that we see as a function of the doomerism message in the original research. I think that would be a more convincing analysis in terms of the effects of doomerism and the corresponding emotions.

Agreed—I’ve been really careful to use “defeatism” explicitly because a lot of people intern “doomism” to mean “things are bad and I feel badly about that,” while others use it to mean “we’re fucked, there’s no point, stop trying.” #2 is what I’m actually worried about, not #1.

Would you agree that #2 could (at least partially) map into feelings of "helplessness"? If so, our data suggest that it is not sig associated with any outcome but for decreasing the willgness to speak about it.
#1 seem to be positively associated with climate-friendly outcomes overall :)

Partly? I do think differentiation is helpful, given the nature of the responses I see.
