I'm really disappointed that Portland doesn't have anything other than half-assed BRT in the planning phase. The downtown tunnel proposal and SW Corridor light rail projects should be much higher priority.

Here's what's clear: Unfortunately, new transit construction has really slowed down in the US since the 1990s and 2000s.

Over the past 4 years—though there was an uptick under Biden compared to under Trump—new urban rail line openings were only about half the level as between 2001 and 2005.

Some cities, however, are really still continuing to build. We have lots of new light rail coming in Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Seattle, and the DC suburbs. And there's some new metro service planned for Honolulu and Los Angeles.

Here are the US transit projects planned to open in 2025:
—Atlanta's Summerhill bus rapid transit (BRT) line, plus bus improvements on Cleveland Ave & Metropolitan Pkwy.
—Austin's bus transit improvements on its Expo Center & Pleasant Valley Lines.
—A short extension of the SMART train north of SF.

—The South Coast Rail project, extending MBTA commuter rail south from Boston to New Bedford & Fall River
—The West Lake Corridor, a new branch of the South Shore Line in the Indiana suburbs of Chicago
—A further expansion of Honolulu's Skyline automated metro, including with an airport stop.

Long story but the light rail extensions in Mpls aren’t going great. One is stuck in NIMBYism and the other is a over budget boondoggle that largely runs thru a sparsely populated corridor to a suburban Costco. The real stuff happening here is marked expansion of BRT & high freq local bus lines!
