I am not sure if there are #tree people here yet but my dad is concerned about his maple tree. When I googled pealing tree bark it was everything from natural/normal to bugs or disease etc. Upstate NY if that is useful to anyone. #arborist #homesteading - ThreadSky

Have woodpeckers been visiting? It is probably a pest that caused this. And if the tree has a lot of them, woodpeckers can usually be found! I'm not sure what can be done except maybe "BioAdvanced 12 Month Tree and Shrub Protect and Feed for Insects, Granules" would work?

Woodpeckers have been on the neighboring crab apple tree for sure so I wouldn’t be surprised.

Not in your area but I would guess it has stem girdling roots. Tree in that 20-30 year old range? Happens when the roots basically choke the tree off when planted too deep.

What you're seeing is the cambium layer dying off and not being able to hold on to the bark.

This is usually causedfrom the tree being buried too deep or having stem girdling Roots

A picture from a little further back that shows the roots would help.
