I emailed a big supplier of disability equipment. I asked about custom options for a particular wheelchair. The (AI) response told me this wasn't possible (it is).

When I tried correcting it, it kept repeating the same words.

Eventually, it was like "thank you for teaching me." 👀

My concern is that AI is providing responses to disabled people that are incorrect and difficult to understand.

Many of us have impairments that make communication difficult at the best of times. AI adds an extra layer of confusion.

It's also unfair that just because my preferred communication is writing (due to disability), I am stuck communicating through an AI program and it's wasting my time.

If I was able to call up or attend their office, I'd get to speak to a real person and receive proper information.

This is such an important point. There’s a clear hierarchy of which forms of communication get direct and timely responses. It’s almost always in person > phone > written. For many of us, this is the exact inverse of what’s most accessible.

To be fair, people might add 'quality and certified' if they're reading from a script. Like, that's the kind of thing that might come up in a statement if they got in trouble for something, and had a pre-written apology, or something.

Makes me think that if this isn't a bot, it's a template.

Which is equally concerning, because you can't help people by just sending out templates. Each person's different, and a generic response isn't good for anyone.
