A better argument is simply that the present human lifespan also represents considerably longer than the vast majority of humans can continue to grow and develop anyway; adding more years onto a stagnated life brings nothing but misery. Death is what allows us to grow socially as a collective.

I wouldn't say "considerably longer", some of the best novelists and scientists continued to be productive well into their 80s, only stopped by aging. I think 150 would be a better stopping point, but I agree with the rest, I think

Oh no I get that, I just meant that people have potential at all ages, hindered only by decay. I still agree that stagnation occurs and death is needed unless brain chemistry is changed, but I think value is still possible with longer lives, just not immortality

Honestly sometimes I don't dismiss the Christian god outright because doing a hard reset early, being cruel and malevolent for 4000 years, and then giving mortality a go before leaving forever with "just don't be jerks ok?" Is so on brand for any human given immortality and unlimited power 😅

Immortality is like being awake without sleep and stuck in the same old clothes. Eventually, you want to rest and dream of doing something else or being someone else. The reason why humans fear death is that they fear of being stuck dead and not doing anything else.
