Most maps are taken at face value as unbiased ‘facts on a page.’ We see this all the time - from social media to courtrooms. But maps have always been used as tools of power to graphically iterate who belongs, who owns. They’ve been used to erase people and exploit resources. (2/4)

Critical studies means not taking something at face value until you’ve critically thought about it. It’s literally critically thinking. If your leaders are trying to erase critical studies, then ask yourself who the system favors and who it oppresses. Maps included. (4/4)

Thank you for this. The way that Indigenous place names have been erased on maps is something I'm very conscious of in Canada. And also how where they've been retained, so many Canadians don't know where they came from or what they mean.

I live just south of Vancouver BC. We travel to Squamish a lot for its climbing, and I always note the indigenous place names on the road signs. It’s nice to see.
