I didn’t know until I saw it on TikTok, but even before than I usually just told people I was autistic because it was more likely that they’d heard of it than Asperger’s.

IDK, friend. I just got diagnosed at 30 and they said I am level one which used to be called Aspergers. Maybe its because you got diagnosed young before they changed it. My brother also got diagnosed as young as you did, same old label, and I told him about my new diagnosis.

I learned through a friend who went through this same experience nearly 10 years ago. It was back before TikTok, when word of mouth and precursors to the modern algorithms were still the way things worked. You're today's Lucky 10,000, good on you for sharing for anyone else who needs to hear this!

Hey don't feel too bad about it. I only found out because of tik tok when someone shared the information. The entire diagnostic criteria we have for autism today is from the research that the Nazis did. And it's still only based on the research that they did on little boys and men.

Because the backward perception of our brains as wrong (despite all evidence to the contrary) makes most people feel awkward about the subject. Which in turn makes many of us reluctant to raise the subject without specific reason/prompt.

Yea, it's officially part of the Autism Spectrum Disorder now, but is still use colloquially by people that either didn't know it wasn't used any longer, by diagnosees that can't handle the name change, or by people that wanted to differentiate themselves from people with more severe cases of ASD.

I was diagnosed with ASD as an adult, but my diagnostician told me that if I had been diagnosed as a child I would have gotten the Asperger's diagnosis. She didn't explain the difference, but I worked in mental health for a while, so knew from that.

Oh I’m so sorry you did not know this. I try to educate those around me that the term is not acceptable anymore but I will not tell any autistic person who prefers to use it they’re wrong if they do, I just proceed with caution and educate if I can.

It's complicated. There are still who use it as an identifier, but my guess is some autistics are resistant to change.

So depending in the circles you are in, it might be in common use.
