Young Americans may not *want* to own a car, but most will have to drive b/c cars are usually the only option when you have a job and kids.

This is what happens when a country has decades of car-centric development. It's the very opposite of freedom.

This is a very big city with adequate public transport and no parking perspective. Not that I think going carless is bad but it's definitely not viable everywhere

I'd be sceptical if a sample that small was presented as conclusive to me by a student. But perhaps the study is more cautious about its conclusions than it is presented here.

That depends on the claim they're making, doesn't it? 280 people out of a population of 100 million gives a confidence interval of almost 6%. That is small enough to say they are different from the other cohorts mentioned in the article.

But then again, it's not a very wild claim, is it? Because young people indeed try to move to cities and take transit.

Also, they interviewed 1,000 people, split the results by age, and found the younger cohort was more willing to go a mixed mobility route - 44% of that group vs 11% older cohort

Certainly people who live in other transit-forward countries don't seem to take issue with a car-free lifestyle if they're not rich & they live in a well-served urban transit area. Our acceptance rates are lower because most of America is transit-starved

I bike commute but depending on where you live car ownership is absolutely worth the time savings. I could save money and take transit at a considerable cost of my time and QoL.

A lot of universities got very big but couldn’t get the corresponding space to have on-campus parking for all students, so a lot of schools have zero-parking-allowed for first-year students. A lot of people have no car present at least the first two years of college. They all manage somehow

yes, and when you're in a walkable city with good public transit it's very easy to go car free as well. (I've lived 20+ years without one.) Sadly, many suburban kids' first/only experience with density and planning is on a college campus.
