The only strategic explanation is that getting the middle finger is exactly what Trump wants to use it as an excuse to stop aid. But that's inconsistent with the desire to get a stake in Ukraine’s rare earth minerals. If he pulls out he gets nothing. So more likely there is nothing strategic here

The funny thing is that had they played it smarter, softer, Putin, Trump and co. would have gotten most things they wished. But they won't because the US gvt has little knowledge of Ukraine and Russians are so committed to viewing Ukrainians as basically Russians that they refuse to understand it

The issue is: they don't matter. They cannot change that Ukrainians are methodically killed on a daily basis. Just like russians who did not vote Putin, they are passive observers of the suffering their country inflicts on others.

We can trust European governments a lot less. They tend to be so mediocre, cowardly, and narrowly-minded selfish...
