One of the cool things about this moment is that previously I’d wait and save money to buy appliances and be excited about the prospect of getting a better version of what I want now. Instead I desperately feel like I need to buy now as the future may bring a smart version or require a subscription.

It's as if nobody even tries to learn from history anymore.
It makes sense that to use the latest version of the software you need the latest OS and if your computer is old enough to not be supported by it then of course you either need to upgrade or use an older version of the software you wanted to use.

I replaced it with one that's completely analog. Best of all, it has a proper agitator.

My mother bought one of those without an agitator 5ish years ago. It does not get dirty clothes clean. Sometimes the dirt will simply transfer onto articles that were less dirty than others!
Mine was a top loading machine. The "high efficiency" aspect meant not enough water to even get everything wet, let alone wash it.
I blame this for the huge marketing push for laundry scents recently.
