The flowers of Blackthorn, AKA Sloe, appear early spring, before the leaves, turning hedgerows into clouds of blossom. Brilliant for wildlife, it provides an early source of pollen for bees & insects, is a food plant for Brown Hairstreak Butterflies & its thorns provide protection for nesting birds

The Bullace or Wild Plum(without thorns) are just finishing and the Sloe or Blackthorn are just about to start. I think of them at peak in the first week of April.
Lovely time of year!
